What is a steel fabric structure?
A steel fabric structure, more formally known as a Tensioned Fabric Structure offers the best solution for anyone needing an open airy environment that is flooded with natural light. Tensioned fabric structures start with metal frames and then a flexible cover is tightened over the frame thus creating a tensioned structure. Incredibly strong fabrics make possible extremely large clear span structures. Some of the largest stadiums, shopping malls, airports and other large commercial structures are tensioned fabric structures.

What is galvanized steel?
Galvanized steel has gone through a chemical process to keep it from corroding. The steel gets coated in layers of zinc because rust won't attack this protective metal. For countless outdoor, marine, or industrial applications, galvanized steel is an essential fabrication component.

The principal method of making steel resist corrosion is by alloying it with another metal, zinc. When steel is submerged in melted zinc, the chemical reaction permanently bonds the zinc to the steel through galvanizing. Therefore, the zinc isn't exactly a sealer, like paint, because it doesn't just coat the steel; it actually permanently becomes a part of it. Besides being inexpensive and effective, this metal is popular because it can be recycled and reused multiple times.

Will I need a permit for my steel fabric structure?
Depending on the location of the structure each town or county has different requirements. Please contact your local building department for more information.

Will Long Island Building Systems assist in the permit process?
Our buildings are fully engineered and we will provide you with information necessary to submit for the permit process. For a fee, Long Island Building Systems can submit for a permit on your behalf. This will include expediting, architectural site plan and elevation, architectural review board meetings, and other various meetings if necessary.

Is the structure designed to meet building codes?
A steel fabric structure can be engineered to meets virtually any wind and snow load requirements. Wind loads range from an average of 75 to 125MPH with snow loads from 12 to 40PSF. Certified-engineering calculations and drawings are available for every size structure. Our steel fabric structure can be designed with widths up to 300’ wide by virtually any length.

Can you provide engineered drawings?
If you require engineered drawings, our drawings will be stamped and signed by an engineer licensed in the State where the structure will be erected; not the State where the structure was manufactured. Local engineering certifications are required by most permitting agencies.

Are steel fabric structures permanent or temporary?
Our shelters are extremely durable. They can be either permanent or temporary based on your needs. Most of the shelters we delivered 5, 10, 15 and even 20 years ago are still in use. However, all steel fabric structures are relocatable, making them perfect for temporary use in areas that require permits or in areas that have environmental loads concerns.

How long does it take to erect a steel fabric structure?
A fabric covered building can be erected faster than virtually any other type of construction on the market. Smaller sizes can be erected by a crew of two to three people using hand tools and a couple of ladders in as little as a few hours to a day or two. Larger sizes (over 60' wide) may require lifting equipment, a three to five person crew and several days.

What sizes are available?
Shelters can be sized and shaped to meet your specific requirements. They can meet size requirements of up to 300’ wide and virtually any length.

What type of foundation will I need?
Foundation can be as little as footings at truss and end column base plate locations. Foundation requirements vary but are typically a fraction of that of similar conventional buildings.

Can I alter the size of a steel fabric structure?
Our steel fabric structures can be easily and cost effectively shortened or lengthened to meet your changing needs.

How is a steel fabric structure priced?
Because every structure is a custom design, prices vary accordingly. We quote every structure individually, taking into consideration its size, shape, accessories and other features. If you're comparing our prices to that of a conventional building, you'll probably find you can realize a savings of about 30% when you look at both material and erection cost.

Are the steel fabric structures flammable?
No, they are made out of flame-resistant fabric.

What are the acoustics like in a steel fabric structure?
Our structures have sound-dampening properties due to the membrane fabric, a real benefit when they're used in construction projects and equestrian applications.

Do the steel fabric structures require any maintenance?
No, they are virtually maintenance free. Cleaning of their exterior walls can be done with pressure washers much like the walls of a conventional building if need be. However, the resistant membrane fabric proves to be self cleaning.

Can my steel fabric structure have ventilation, air-conditioning and heat?
Yes, our steel fabric structures can be open air or fully enclosed. If enclosed, they can have ventilation, insulation, filtration, air-conditioning and heat.
